Hula Hoops

Well, I haven’t done much working out per say. I’ve upped the amounts and distance of walks with the dog. I even tried jogging with Milo a couple of nights ago, but it was an unmitigated disaster. He was either under my feet trying to trip and kill me or he was suddenly distracted and needed to stop to smell something. Maybe I’ll just try jogging on my own for now.

Two weeks ago, I was in Walmart and passed by a bin of hula hoops. I kept on going and something made me stop. Maybe that would be a fun way to exercise? I turned around and looked at the brightly coloured hoops and considered it for a moment. Would I look stupid, did I even remember how to hula hoop? It’s gotta be like riding a bike right?

So, I selected a blue hoop and added it to my cart. Here goes nothing, I thought.

It had been sitting in a bin in my kitchen, staring at me when I finally decided to take it out two nights ago. Easy peasy.

I took it into the living room and proceeded to put it around my upper waist. Milo was looking up at me with keen interest, probably thinking that this funny thing was a toy for him.

So, I wound it up and gave it a spin.

Nothing. My body ceased to react and it fell to the floor with a thud, scaring the dog. I picked it up and tried again. And again. And again. In the words of Shakira, my hips don’t lie. They are not coordinated whatsoever. I kept trying but the hula hoop just kept hitting the floor. I was frustrated and discouraged. How could this be so hard?

Right about then, the Bear came upstairs and asked what I was doing. Failing. That’s what I’m doing.

She grabed the hoop and proceeded to spin it around her little body for no less than two minutes. Swirl, swirl, swirl. Like a graceful bird. Now I’m just embarrassed. Darren assured me that I just need to practice.

Last night I pulled it out again. The dog slinks away, anticipating the thud of the hoop on the floor. Same results. I just can’t get my body moving right to keep the hula hoop up. Maybe I need to watch a couple YouTube videos. I’ll keep trying.

Next up, skipping rope. We’ll see if I can heave this heavy body up into the air repeatedly. I’m sure nothing can go wrong there…
